O aterro sanitário Bandeirantes não recebe mais lixo da coleta em São Paulo. Mas continua em atividade, administrado pela empresa Loga, que monitora o terreno. Para entrar no aterro, que fica na altura do quilômetro 26 da rodovia dos Bandeirantes, é preciso atravessar uma cancela e passar por uma estrada de terra que, depois de dez minutos, leva à sede do local.
Ao sair do carro, não é possível sentir cheiro de lixo. E um olhar rápido só consegue detectar montanhas intermináveis revestidas de grama na imensa área de 1,4 milhão de metros quadrados. Mas um exame mais atento pode revelar solados de sapato, embalagens de adoçante e latinhas de alumínio que parecem brotar do chão. Os 60 cm de terra que separam as camadas de lixo nem sempre são suficientes para conter as chuvas, e é comum que alguns objetos apareçam pelo chão. São resíduos recicláveis, mas, por causa do descarte incorreto, vieram parar no aterro e demorarão anos para se decompor.
Os recicláveis são minoria, estima-se que 60% do lixo aterrado seja orgânico. O problema é que ele está armazenado em sacos de plástico que não são biodegradáveis e muitas vezes impedem que o resíduo orgânico se decomponha na terra. O processo acontece dentro do saco, que fica estufado pelo metano liberado na decomposição até estourar.
O processo de decomposição dos resíduos orgânicos gera, além do metano, que é captado para gerar energia na usina termelétrica da Biogás, o chorume, um líquido tóxico que é bombeado até um reservatório batizado com o simpático nome de “lagoa de chorume”. De lá, o líquido passa por canos para um caminhão que o leva para a Sabesp, onde é tratado junto com o esgoto.
O aterro Bandeirantes funcionou entre 1979 e 2006 e acumulou, durante todo esse tempo, 38 milhões de toneladas de lixo. Foi desativado por ter atingido o limite de 150 metros de altura de lixo – mais do que isso aumenta muito o risco de deslizamentos no local. Hoje o lixo de São Paulo é destinado para dois aterros: o CDR Pedeira e o Caieiras.
